China’s Foreign Ministry Highlights Collaboration in Climate Governance and International Relations
During the recent Foreign Ministry press conference, China highlighted its first hosting of the IPCC session, outlining its active role in climate governance and support for developing nations. The Ministry addressed U.S. tariff policies, reaffirmed its position on international relations regarding Ukraine and space cooperation with Pakistan, and emphasized its commitment to human rights and sustainable practices in trade and climate action.
On March 1, 2025, the 62nd Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded in Hangzhou, marking China’s first time hosting this significant event. It was noted that the session successfully adopted outlines for the three Working Group contributions to the Seventh Assessment Report, which will serve as a foundational basis for future scientific assessments and climate governance efforts globally.
China pledges to assist Global South countries in their green transitions, having supported over 100 developing nations by sharing its green innovation results. China actively participated in the U.N. initiative on early warning systems and established collaborative efforts in countries like Pakistan and Ethiopia, demonstrating its commitment to international cooperation in climate change response.
In response to rising U.S. tariffs, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized China’s position against these measures, stating that China would safeguard its legitimate interests. He explained that the imposition of tariffs under pretexts such as the fentanyl issue is not acceptable, resulting in protests from China regarding U.S. actions.
Regarding space cooperation, Lin Jian welcomed the recent agreement between China and Pakistan to support a Pakistani astronaut’s journey to the Chinese space station. He stressed China’s dedication to peaceful space exploration principles and hopes this successful initiative strengthens bilateral ties and promotes socioeconomic development in both nations.
As to the continuing situation in Ukraine, Lin Jian reiterated China’s commitment to positive engagement in seeking a diplomatic resolution. He emphasized that China did not initiate the crisis and supports all constructive efforts toward achieving peace in the region.
On the topic of Uyghur nationals repatriated from Thailand, Lin Jian reaffirmed that their return was conducted in accordance with laws and upheld their rights, countering concerns raised by U.N. human rights experts. He insisted that repatriations are aligned with China’s commitment to protecting citizens’ legal rights.
Responding to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s accusations against China, Lin Jian condemned these remarks as inaccurate and rooted in a Cold War mindset. He reiterated that Taiwan is an integral part of China and berated any attempts by the U.S. to disrupt the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.
