ECOWAS Urges Enhanced Unity Amid Recent Withdrawals of Member States

During the recent ‘1st Parliamentary Seminar on ECOWAS @50 & Parliament @25’ held in Lagos, Hon. Hadja Memounatou Ibrahim, the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, emphasized the need for enhanced regional unity among member states amidst the situation surrounding the withdrawal of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso from the organization in January 2024. Ibrahim called for sustaining bilateral relations with these nations and for a thorough reflection on ECOWAS’s direction after half a century of existence.

Furthermore, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Jibrin Barau, praised President Bola Tinubu for his leadership in strengthening regional stability, saying he serves as a beacon of inspiration for sub-regional cooperation. In his remarks, he highlighted Tinubu’s role as Chairman of the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, underscoring the importance of his vision in advancing West Africa’s goals.

Concurrently, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu reiterated the necessity for ECOWAS member states to recommit to ideals of regional integration, aiming for a prosperous and united West Africa. He urged the removal of trade barriers to facilitate free movement within the region, fostering a climate where every citizen can thrive economically and socially.

The ECOWAS Speaker also addressed the gravity of the departing nations’ situation, noting that internal tensions and security challenges prompted their strategic repositioning. She insisted that this withdrawal should serve as an impetus for greater dialogue and understanding among member states, rather than a rejection of shared values.

In addition, Sanwo-Olu reflected on the pivotal role of Lagos as an economic and cultural hub for West Africa, emphasizing that the state is ready to support ECOWAS in addressing collective challenges like security, economic development, and climate change.
