Guyana Prime Minister Mark Phillips arrives in India for the World Sustainable Development Summit 2025. On March 4, 2025, Guyana’s Prime Minister Brigadier (Retd) Mark Phillips arrived in New Delhi to participate in the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS). The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, remarked that this visit will enhance the growing relationship between India and Guyana in various fields, including sustainable development and renewable energy.

The WSDS, occurring from March 5 to 7, focuses on the theme ‘Partnerships for Accelerating Sustainable Development and Climate Solutions’. This annual summit, organized by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), serves as a platform for multistakeholder discussions on critical sustainability issues.

During a prior engagement, Guyana’s Health Minister, Frank Anthony, expressed profound appreciation for India’s timely support during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially regarding vaccine provision. He noted that India’s aid was instrumental in saving lives in Guyana when vaccines were scarce globally.

Minister Anthony stated, “I think during COVID, the vaccines that we received from India helped us to save many lives… Nevertheless, you did not hoard like other countries did, but you were willing to share. And so we are extremely grateful.” He further acknowledged India’s premier healthcare system as a model for Guyana to emulate, showcasing India’s advancements in health management.

Anthony also highlighted the strengthening of relations between the two nations, referencing visits by Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, which solidified mutual agreements, particularly in healthcare. He noted, “…their presence and visit helped to further strengthen our relationship,” emphasizing the ongoing collaboration between India and Guyana.

The arrival of Prime Minister Mark Phillips in India signifies an important step in bolstering India-Guyana ties, especially in sustainable development and healthcare. Guyana remains grateful for India’s support during the pandemic, reflecting the strength of their bilateral relationship.
