With the IOC presidential election nearing, Christopher Samuda of the JOA emphasizes the need for a candidate committed to global sports development. Seven candidates are competing for this vital position, with the election set for March 20, 2024, in Greece. Samuda highlights the importance of integrity and actionable commitment in leadership, urging IOC members to prioritize character and true service over mere rhetoric.

As the International Olympic Committee (IOC) presidential election approaches in 16 days, Christopher Samuda, President of the Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA), emphasizes the necessity for an active and committed individual. Candidates must prioritize the JOA and engage with various global sports organizations. During the 144th IOC Session, held in Greece from March 18 to 21, 2024, IOC members will select a successor for Thomas Bach on March 20.

Seven candidates are vying for the IOC presidency, including Prince Feisal Al Hussein, David Lappartient, Johan Eliasch, Juan Antonio Samaranch, Sebastian Coe, Morinari Watanabe, and Kirsty Coventry, who aims to be the first female president. Notably, the JOA lacks voting power, as only IOC individual members may cast ballots, totaling 109.

Samuda has abstained from endorsing any particular candidate but emphasizes the elected president must support the development of sports both in Jamaica and globally. He stated, “A future president needs not only to commit to supporting the JOA, but all national Olympic committees across the spectrum.” Genuine commitment, he adds, must be reflected in both words and actions.

To gain the trust of the JOA, the ideal candidate should embody integrity, leadership skills, and an inclusive vision. Samuda articulated, “He or she who is true to herself or himself… who puts people first… will earn trust.” The candidates have campaigned since presenting their manifestos to IOC members on January 30, 2024.

Samuda urges members to select a leader capable of transforming the Olympic movement, emphasizing that the election should favor candidates based on authentic character rather than mere promises. He remarked, “The test should not be… who gives the best messianic manifesto… but who demonstrates character in thought, word, and deed.”

The elected president will serve for eight years, possibly extending for another four, overseeing two Summer Olympics and two Winter Olympics, including the Los Angeles Games in 2028.

In summary, Christopher Samuda stresses the importance of electing a president who is not solely a figurehead but actively commits to the development of global sports organizations. As the IOC’s presidential election approaches, candidates must demonstrate integrity, commitment, and a visionary leadership style. Ultimately, members must choose wisely, as the next president will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the Olympic movement.
