On March 2, Tropical Storm Honde impacted the southwestern coast of Madagascar, leading to severe consequences for several regions. As of the latest reports, three fatalities have been confirmed, one person is missing, and 69 individuals sustained injuries. Approximately 21,600 people have been displaced, primarily from Toliara, Belo sur Tsiribihina, and Ampanihy. The storm also inflicted substantial damage on infrastructure, particularly housing and educational facilities.
Humanitarian efforts are ongoing, with the government spearheading the response and various partners mobilizing resources. A helicopter was deployed for rescue operations in Ampanihy District, aiding approximately 80 to 100 stranded individuals. Food security initiatives have already distributed crucial supplies, including 30 metric tons of rice and 7 metric tons of oil in Ampanihy, covering essential needs for the displaced.
Following the storm, many families found shelter in 54 designated accommodation sites across the affected districts. Significant infrastructural damage was reported, with over 7,200 houses flooded, 913 suffering damage, and 1,924 completely destroyed. Additionally, multiple schools sustained extensive damage, adversely affecting educational continuity for students.
The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) coordinated immediate response efforts, holding meetings with local authorities to devise anticipatory actions. There was also a stock mapping exercise to assess available supplies in southwestern cities, ensuring optimal resource allocation as the peak cyclone season approaches. Additional support resources are urgently needed to replenish stocks following assistance operations after Cyclone Dikeledi in January.
As Tropical Storm Honde continues to diminish and move away from the coast, the affected regions now require substantial aid to recover from the devastation. The humanitarian community remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting displaced populations through coordinated efforts, thereby addressing their immediate needs and laying the groundwork for long-term recovery.
Tropical Storm Honde has had a significant impact on Madagascar, resulting in fatalities, injuries, and widespread displacement. The storm has also caused extensive infrastructural damages, complicating recovery efforts. Ongoing humanitarian responses, led by the government and partners, are critical in providing immediate assistance to the affected populations. The situation remains fluid, with additional resources being requested to support recovery as Madagascar navigates the peak cyclone season.
