Morocco Reaffirms Commitment to Human Rights at 58th Council Session

During the 58th Human Rights Council session in Geneva, Morocco reiterated its commitment to human rights. Ambassador Omar Zniber outlined two key initiatives against enforced disappearances and the establishment of the International Network for Human Rights. Morocco also aims to strengthen women’s roles in diplomacy and update its legal framework to meet international standards.

Morocco has reaffirmed its dedication to promoting human rights during the 58th session of the Human Rights Council, which is ongoing in Geneva until April 4. Ambassador Omar Zniber, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, highlighted that Morocco, in collaboration with Argentina, France, and Samoa, is making significant steps against enforced disappearances through two main national commitments.

The first commitment involves organizing a regional symposium in Morocco aimed at promoting the ratification of the Convention against Enforced Disappearances. The second includes proposing the inclusion of enforced disappearance in national criminal legislation as both an independent crime and a crime against humanity.

Furthermore, Morocco is collaborating with Paraguay and Portugal to enhance the International Network of National Mechanisms for implementing human rights. This initiative was showcased by hosting the 10th edition of the Glion Dialogue on Human Rights last October, leading to the adoption of the Marrakech Policy Framework, which focuses on effective national mechanisms.

Morocco also seeks to advance women’s diplomacy within human rights and will introduce a draft resolution to celebrate International Women’s Day in Geneva annually. The ambassador confirmed that the Kingdom is continuing to strengthen its legal framework for human rights and mentioned ongoing projects such as revising the Family Code to reflect social transformations and international commitments.

Moreover, Morocco is engaging in constructive discussions regarding drafts of the Penal Code and laws on criminal procedure to align with international human rights standards. Recent legislative actions include the adoption of a law defining strike conditions and the implementation of alternative sentencing laws, both crucial for contemporary penal policy imperatives.
