Patriotism Essential for Ghana’s Economic Renewal, States Dr. Yamson

Dr. Ismael Yamson has called for patriotism among Ghana’s political leaders as a guiding principle for the nation’s economic reset. He attributed Ghana’s economic challenges to corrupt political practices and emphasized the need for collective responsibility in overcoming these hurdles. President John Dramani Mahama also highlighted the importance of unity and optimism in rebuilding the economy.
Dr. Ismael Yamson, the Chairman of the National Economic Dialogue Planning Committee, has emphasized the necessity of patriotism, particularly among the political elite, as Ghana embarks on a crucial economic reset. During his address at the initiation of a two-day dialogue in Accra, he identified the prevailing political practices as a significant cause of the country’s economic hardships, labeling them as ‘self-inflicted’ wounds on the nation.
He articulated that the current political mentality is tainted by greed, where leaders prioritize personal enrichment over national welfare, leading to rampant corruption and ineffectiveness. Dr. Yamson remarked that, in this political environment, opposing parties often remain dormant, misleading public perception rather than facilitating genuine progress, resulting in a decline in national pride.
Despite Ghana’s extensive history, the economy has principally been hindered by domestic issues, rather than solely external factors, according to Dr. Yamson. He expressed concerns regarding the country’s ongoing dependence on exporting raw materials to sustain its populace, coupled with systemic corruption, ineffective governance, and high unemployment rates, prompting many youth to seek opportunities abroad.
He urged that responsibility must lie with both leaders and citizens to tackle their challenges, stating, “Let us take responsibility for resetting our destiny with our own hands.” Dr. Yamson warned that the path to revitalizing Ghana’s economy would be arduous, filled with internal and external challenges, yet success is achievable with resolved leadership and collective ownership.
President John Dramani Mahama, also speaking at the event, acknowledged the challenges ahead but urged Ghanaians to remain hopeful and collaborate in the effort to construct a more resilient economy. He asserted, “We owe it to ourselves, our children and our country to rebuild an economy that is resilient, sustainable and capable of delivering real opportunities for every citizen.”
In summary, Dr. Yamson has aptly identified patriotism and political integrity as foundational elements required for Ghana’s economic revitalization. He shed light on the self-imposed nature of current economic challenges and urged collective responsibility from both leaders and citizens. The support from President Mahama further reaffirms the commitment to rebuilding a resilient economy that ensures opportunities for all Ghanaians.
