Peru’s Minister Urges Sustainable Integration of Mining Operations

Energy and Mines Minister Jorge Montero urged for integrating mining operations in Peru to enhance sustainability during the Peru Day event. Peru’s Energy and Mines Minister, Jorge Montero, has emphasized the importance of integrating mining operations within shared territories to enhance sustainability within the sector. This statement was made during his presentation, “Mining in Peru: A New Vision,” at the Peru Day event, attended by global investors and business leaders. Montero advocated for adopting integration models similar to those in British Columbia, Canada, to promote efficient resource utilization.

Minister Montero also highlighted Peru’s metallurgical recovery, noting the significant investments aimed at increasing the value of various strategic minerals found in polymetallic and copper concentrates. In a meeting with executives from Nexa Resources, he received updates regarding the integration of El Porvenir and Atacocha mines located in Pasco region.

Additionally, Nexa presented their plans to extend the Cerro Lindo mining unit’s operational lifespan, currently reliant on seawater transportation from 60 kilometers away for desalination purposes. Montero commended the corporation’s commitment to sustainable mining practices and expressed interest in visiting the Cajamarquilla refinery, recognized as the primary producer of refined zinc in Peru.

During discussions with Tsevegdorj Tuvaan, head of Mongolia’s Ministry of Industry and Natural Resources, Minister Montero welcomed Mongolia’s interest in Peru’s mining sector and its potential for attracting foreign investment. He noted that future mining developments would prioritize seawater desalination and a comprehensive territorial perspective to maintain harmony with local communities.

Furthermore, Montero mentioned that Mongolia’s initiatives to boost investments in Peru would be favorably received. He also expressed enthusiasm for a potential visit by a delegation of Peruvian mining businessmen to explore opportunities in Mongolia.
