Türkiye Invites Iranian Diplomat Over Critical Remarks on Bilateral Relations

The Turkish Foreign Ministry has called for an Iranian diplomat’s presence following derogatory comments from Iranian officials about Türkiye. The meeting addressed ongoing bilateral relations, with emphasis placed on direct communication. This follows a similar reaction from Iran regarding comments made by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, underscoring the delicate nature of their diplomatic relationship.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry has summoned the chargé d’affaires of the Iranian Embassy in response to recent derogatory comments made by Iranian officials regarding Türkiye. Öncü Keçeli, the ministry’s spokesman, announced on March 4 that this diplomatic engagement addressed claims made by Iranian representatives and included discussions on bilateral relations.
During the meeting, Keçeli reiterated that Türkiye cherishes its relationship with Iran and aspires to strengthen it further. He mentioned that a detailed dossier documenting the criticized statements had already been provided to the Iranian officials, emphasizing the importance of direct communication regarding foreign policy matters.
This diplomatic initiative from Türkiye follows an invitation sent by the Iranian Foreign Ministry to the Turkish Ambassador in Tehran, Hicabi Kırlangıç, to convey their displeasure regarding comments made by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan about Iran’s regional policies. Some media outlets claimed that this meeting amounted to a formal summoning, but the Iranian Ministry did not characterize it in such terms.
On March 3, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei expressed that Iran holds its bilateral relations with Türkiye in high regard while asserting the necessity of a decisive response to the remarks made by the Turkish Minister.
In summary, Türkiye has actively engaged Iran diplomatically in response to disparaging remarks made by Iranian officials. The Turkish Foreign Ministry emphasizes the importance of preserving and enhancing bilateral ties, maintaining direct communication on foreign policy issues. Meanwhile, the relationship continues to be under scrutiny, particularly in light of recent critiques and diplomatic exchanges between the two nations.
