European Parliament Delegation Engages with UAE’s NHRI on Human Rights Progress

On February 28, 2025, a European Parliament delegation visited the UAE’s National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) to review its advancements in human rights. They praised the NHRI’s efforts and international engagement, while chairperson Maqsoud Kruse emphasized the importance of the NHRI’s role in promoting these values. This meeting is the second of its kind following a prior visit in 2022, showcasing the growing recognition of the NHRI’s role in human rights advocacy.
On February 28, 2025, a high-level delegation from the European Parliament visited the National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) in Abu Dhabi, gaining insights into the UAE’s advancements in human rights. During the meeting, the delegation was briefed on the NHRI’s initiatives and strategic directives aimed at promoting a culture of human rights within the UAE.
The European delegation commended the NHRI for its significant contributions to human rights advocacy, acknowledging its active participation in both regional and international frameworks, notably with the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI). The meeting was presided over by Maqsoud Kruse, Chairperson of the NHRI, and Dr. Saeed Al Ghufli, the NHRI’s Secretary-General.
Chairperson Kruse remarked, “This visit reflects the growing importance that international institutions place on the active role of the NHRI in promoting and protecting human rights.” He further asserted the NHRI’s commitment to enhancing the UAE’s stature as a model of human rights adherence.
The delegation included prominent figures such as Reinhold Lopatka, Chairperson of the European Parliament delegation and representatives from Spain and Sweden. Accompanying them were Lucía Berger, EU Ambassador to the UAE, and several advisors specializing in Middle East affairs, demonstrating a strong commitment to ongoing dialogue.
This visit marks the second engagement of a European Parliament delegation with the NHRI, following a prior visit in 2022. It underscores the increasing global recognition of the NHRI’s vital role in human rights protection and its commitment to transparency and collaborative international relations.
