IGAD Calls for Restraint and Dialogue Amid Rising Tensions in South Sudan

IGAD expresses deep concern over escalating tensions in Nasir County, South Sudan, urging all parties to restrain and prioritize dialogue. Executive Secretary H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu calls for efforts to protect civilians and stabilize the region. IGAD plans to send a high-level delegation to evaluate the situation and support the peace process.

On March 5, 2025, the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, expressed significant concern about the recent tensions and violent clashes in Nasir County, South Sudan. These incidents endanger the substantial progress achieved under the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) and jeopardize the nation’s peace efforts.

H.E. Dr. Workneh urged all involved parties to maintain maximum restraint, reinforce their commitment to the R-ARCSS, and prioritize dialogue and reconciliation as essential pathways to sustainable peace. Furthermore, he called upon the Government of South Sudan, local authorities, and all stakeholders to intensify their efforts toward de-escalation and promote civilian protection and regional stability.

In light of the escalating situation, IGAD will send a high-level delegation to assess the circumstances on the ground and engage with the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) to restore calm and further the peace process.

As a guarantor of the R-ARCSS, IGAD reaffirms its unwavering commitment to facilitating the agreement’s full implementation. The organization continues to collaborate with regional and international partners to foster peace and security in South Sudan.

The increasing violence in Nasir County poses significant threats to the peace process in South Sudan, as highlighted by IGAD’s Executive Secretary. Urgent calls for restraint, dialogue, and reconciliation are essential for de-escalation and protection of civilians.
