Morocco Experiences Significant Decrease in Measles Cases (Bouhmroun)

Morocco’s Ministry of Health has reported a steady decline in measles cases, known as Bouhmroun, for five consecutive weeks, with a 13% drop noted recently. The decrease is attributed to effective healthcare efforts and increased public participation in vaccination campaigns, which have now been extended until March 28. Although progress is evident, the ministry emphasizes ongoing vigilance and equal access to vaccination across provinces, particularly to protect vulnerable children.

The Ministry of Health in Morocco has announced a consistent decline in measles cases, known locally as “Bouhmroun,” marking the fifth consecutive week of decrease. This positive trend has been attributed to comprehensive efforts aimed at controlling the spread of the virus.

From February 24 to March 2, there was a 13% reduction in cases, amounting to 2,481 confirmed instances. This follows a previous week where a 14.9% reduction was noted, with 2,863 cases reported. The ministry commended ongoing collaboration among healthcare professionals, stakeholders, and heightened citizen participation in vaccination initiatives.

To enhance vaccination accessibility, the Moroccan authorities have decided to extend the vaccination campaign until March 28. This is part of the national campaign aimed at verifying vaccination status to ensure all families receive essential immunizations.

Despite the significant decline in cases, the ministry emphasized the need for continued vigilance, especially regarding disparities in vaccination coverage across various provinces. Citizens are urged to actively participate in combating measles through vaccination, which remains the most effective method of prevention.

Health Minister Amine Tahraoui reported that as of December, Morocco had experienced a total of 19,515 measles cases since October 2023, resulting in 107 fatalities, or approximately 0.55% of the reported cases. Alarmingly, half of these deaths were among children under the age of 12, highlighting the increased risk for younger populations.
