S. Jaishankar Highlights India’s Interests in US Multipolarity Shift

Jaishankar commented on the Quad alliance comprising the US, India, Australia, and Japan, saying, “From President Trump’s perspective, the one big shared enterprise that we have is the Quad, which is an understanding where everybody pays their fair share… There are no free riders involved. So that’s a good model which works.”
In discussing tariffs, he mentioned that conversations had taken place regarding the necessity of a trade agreement following a previous dialogue between Prime Minister Modi and Trump. Expressing cautious optimism about the India-UK Free Trade Agreement negotiations, he noted that despite complexities, there is a mutual interest to progress.
The minister also addressed other critical foreign policy topics, including India’s active role in discussions concerning the Russia-Ukraine conflict, advocating direct negotiations between the involved parties. Regarding China, Jaishankar acknowledged recent positive developments, specifically citing the opening of the Mount Kailash pilgrimage route.
When queried about the Kashmir situation, Jaishankar outlined a three-step plan for resolution. He indicated that addressing the matter of illegally occupied territories by Pakistan would be pivotal for achieving a lasting solution.
Jaishankar’s six-day visit to the UK and Ireland includes further discussions, such as scheduled talks with Irish counterpart Simon Harris.
