Former President Trump joked about the African nation of Lesotho during a Congressional address, highlighting a U.S. aid project while stating, “Which nobody has ever heard of.” Lesotho faces high rates of HIV/AIDS, prompting significant U.S. support. However, Trump’s return to office has seen substantial cuts to foreign aid, focusing instead on domestic fiscal policies.

During a recent address to Congress, former President Donald Trump referred to the African nation of Lesotho, remarking on a past U.S. aid project. He mentioned the allocation of eight million dollars aimed at promoting LGBTQI+ rights in Lesotho, humorously adding, “Which nobody has ever heard of.” This comment elicited laughter from Republican lawmakers, including Vice President JD Vance and Speaker Mike Johnson, who were seen grinning in response.

Lesotho is notably characterized by its high prevalence of HIV/AIDS, an issue that the United States has actively addressed through significant contributions. Since 2006, over $630 million has been committed by the U.S. to combat HIV/AIDS in the nation, aimed at providing essential medication and social support, particularly for marginalized sexual minorities.

In addition to addressing health concerns, the U.S. signed a significant agreement last year worth $300 million to enhance health and agricultural productivity in Lesotho through the Millennium Challenge Corporation. This initiative supports developing countries that uphold standards of democracy and good governance. However, the Trump administration’s return to power has resulted in the cancellation of more than 90 percent of U.S. foreign aid, redirecting funds towards domestic tax cuts.

Under the influence of South African-born billionaire Elon Musk, the Trump administration has also effectively restricted the operations of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Historically, during his first term, President Trump exhibited little enthusiasm for African affairs, having been previously reported to use explicit language when referring to immigrants from the continent.

In summary, former President Trump invoked Lesotho during a Congressional speech, commenting on U.S. aid efforts while eliciting amusement from his audience. Despite his flippant remarks, significant U.S. investments have been made to combat HIV/AIDS in this nation. Nonetheless, his administration has shifted its focus away from foreign aid towards domestic policies, raising concerns about future international support.
