Ericsson has upgraded UNITEL’s core network in Angola to include 5G Standalone capabilities, facilitating enhanced connectivity and next-generation services. Ericsson has successfully upgraded UNITEL S.A.’s core network in Angola to facilitate 5G Standalone capabilities, enhancing connectivity and providing next-generation digital services for both businesses and consumers. This modernization utilizes the Ericsson dual-mode 5G Core, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), and Cloud Native Infrastructure to integrate 4G and 5G technologies on a unified platform.

The new architecture allows for customized services through network slicing and improved voice and data services via 5G Standalone. Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Core utilizes cloud-native, microservices technology, which supports the migration from existing legacy voice services to modern 4G and 5G networks, enhancing communication options for UNITEL’s customers across various access networks.

In a significant milestone, Ericsson and UNITEL have completed a trial data call over a live 5G Standalone network. This development maximizes the advantages of 5G technology, providing higher speeds, lower latency, and advanced services to consumers and businesses across varied sectors.

Júlio Gonçalves, Director of Core and Services at UNITEL, emphasized the transformative nature of this partnership, stating, “Our partnership with Ericsson is a game-changer for Angola’s telecommunications landscape.” The strategic upgrade will enhance services such as VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling, and FWA, contributing significantly to Angola’s economic growth.
