A major smuggling operation was disrupted in Guyana when two Brazilians were arrested for attempting to transport gold and over $26 million in cash into Brazil. The operation, led by SOCU, reflects the ongoing efforts to combat illegal smuggling activities at the border.

Authorities in Guyana thwarted a significant smuggling attempt at the border with Brazil, resulting in the arrest of two Brazilian nationals. This operation, led by the Special Organized Crime Unit (SOCU), took place in Lethem, Region 9, where officers seized a considerable amount of gold and over $26 million in Guyanese currency.

The suspects, identified as Albina Filho Alves Vieira, 42, and Erizangela Regia De Olivera, 39, both hailing from Boa Vista, Brazil, are currently cooperating with law enforcement during the ongoing investigation. Their apprehension highlights the challenges faced by authorities in combating smuggling and illegal activities across borders.

Deputy Commissioner Fazil Karimbaksh emphasized the success of this operation, noting it serves as a deterrent to others engaged in illegal activities. “The operation also serves as a warning to individuals and groups engaged in such illicit activities that law enforcement agencies remain vigilant and proactive in their enforcement efforts,” he stated.

This incident follows a previous enforcement action in July of the previous year, wherein three Chinese nationals were arrested at the Ramada Princess Hotel, also linked to significant amounts of money and illegal items.

The successful intervention by the Guyanese authorities underscores their commitment to combating smuggling and illegal activities at the border with Brazil. The arrests of Albina Filho Alves Vieira and Erizangela Regia De Olivera, including the substantial seizures of gold and cash, reflect the proactive measures law enforcement is taking to prevent such illicit operations.
