IGAD Voices Concerns Over Rising Tensions in South Sudan

IGAD has raised alarm over rising tensions in South Sudan following arrests of key political figures, urging restraint and commitment to peace. A delegation will be sent to assess the situation, emphasizing dialogue and reconciliation as essential for stability.
The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has expressed significant concern regarding the rising tensions and armed clashes in Nasir County, South Sudan. This unrest follows the recent arrests of various political figures, including Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol and Deputy Army Chief General Gabriel Duop Lam, which are believed to be linked to First Vice President Riek Machar.
In light of the political instability, IGAD has cautioned that such tensions could jeopardize the achievements of the 2018 peace agreement. IGAD’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, has urged all parties to demonstrate restraint, commit to dialogue, and prioritize reconciliation to promote lasting peace in South Sudan. Additionally, IGAD plans to send a high-level delegation to evaluate the deteriorating situation in the region.
Dr. Workneh emphasized the need for all involved to reaffirm their commitment to the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), stating, “The Executive Secretary urges the Government of South Sudan, local authorities, and all stakeholders to redouble efforts toward de-escalation and reconciliation, ensuring the protection of civilians and the stability of the region.”
The unrest intensified after the arrests of political allies of Riek Machar, raising further alarms as soldiers surrounded Machar’s residence in Juba. The specific reasons for the arrests remain unclear, although they followed an attack by an armed group linked to Machar on an army base in Upper Nile State. Machar has warned that the removal of his allies jeopardizes the fragile peace established after a five-year civil war, which resulted in the loss of 400,000 lives.
In summary, the escalating tensions in South Sudan, prompted by significant arrests and armed clashes, have raised alarm within IGAD. The organization is urging all parties to engage in constructive dialogue and reconciliation to uphold the hard-fought peace established in 2018. Continued instability poses a serious threat to achieving lasting peace and civil protection in the region.
