At Chatham House in London, he noted that the Indian government provided Sri Lanka with over $4 billion to help mitigate the severe economic downturn experienced in 2022, a situation that also escalated into a political crisis.
Jaishankar stated, “When Sri Lanka had a very serious financial crisis, while the rest of the world largely sat on its hands, we actually came forward with a package of more than $4 billion, which was almost twice the size of the IMF package.” He stressed the principle of reciprocity, remarking that while India is generous as a larger economy, it expects its neighbors to acknowledge India’s interests and sensitivities.
During the event, hosted by Chatham House in partnership with the High Commission of India in the UK, Jaishankar discussed India’s evolving influence in global affairs. He further commented on the shift towards a multipolar world, largely influenced by changes in U.S. policy.
