Cameroon Invests CFA73 Billion in Road Projects for 2024

Cameroon’s Jointly Financed Road Projects Unit has awarded 35 contracts in 2024, totaling CFA72.9 billion with an 87.5% execution rate. The budget has been cut to CFA201 billion, but significant projects continue, including the rehabilitation of over 193 kilometers of roads and the expansion of critical access routes, demonstrating resilience in infrastructure development.

In 2024, Cameroon’s Jointly Financed Road Projects Unit, under the Ministry of Public Works, awarded 35 contracts worth CFA72.9 billion, reflecting an impressive execution rate of 87.5%. This number represents a decline from the initial projection of 40 contracts, significantly down from the 71 contracts anticipated in a March 2024 report, which totaled CFA317 billion for road integration and transport facilitation initiatives.

The unit has also made an adjustment to its annual budget, reducing it from CFA289 billion to CFA201 billion. Of this revised budget, CFA130 billion was allocated, achieving an execution rate of 64%. The initial budget had earmarked CFA284 billion for investments alongside CFA5 billion for operational costs, indicating a need for financial prudence.

Notwithstanding budget reductions, significant projects advanced. The unit successfully completed 13 studies, including four dedicated to roads covering 661 kilometers. Rehabilitation and upgrades were conducted on over 193 kilometers of roadways, with 95% of the planned works accomplished. Cost savings from various projects enabled the funding of an additional 119 kilometers of municipal road construction.

Furthermore, the financial resources facilitated the expansion of the northern access road in Yaoundé by 22 kilometers and the rehabilitation of the Mora-Tchakamari road located in the Far North region of Cameroon. These advancements highlight the ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure despite fiscal challenges.
