On March 5, the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) commemorated the legacy of Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez, who passed away 12 years ago. Orlando Maneiro Gaspar, the Venezuelan ambassador to Cuba, emphasized Chavez’s revolutionary dedication and his vision for Venezuela, highlighting the unity fostered by Bolivarian ideals. He noted, ‘His special relationship with Cuba consolidated a strategic, ideological and personal alliance that has left a very special legacy, now that US imperialism intensifies its aggressiveness against the peoples.’
In her address, Noemí Rabaza Fernández, First Vice-President of ICAP, acknowledged the parallel paths of Chavez and Fidel Castro, describing them as icons who aimed to create enduring unity among Latin American and Caribbean nations. She stated that their cooperation transcended mere collaboration, ultimately realizing the aspirations of historical figures like Bolivar and Marti.
Rabaza also commented on the ongoing challenges posed by decades of sanctions against Cuba and Venezuela, asserting that both countries embody the possibility of an alternate vision for the Americas, where sovereignty prevails. She asserted, ‘Cuba and Venezuela are not alone; we will defend peace and fight fascism disguised as democracy, the one that persecutes social leaders, criminalizes protest, destroys Palestine, and intends to take away our future.’
In commemorating Hugo Chavez’s legacy, both Venezuelan and Cuban officials underscored the necessity of solidarity in the face of external pressures. They reaffirmed their commitment to the ideals of unity and sovereignty championed by their leaders amidst ongoing challenges. The events highlighted a shared historical narrative and a collective resolve to address the current threats posed by imperialism and to cultivate a future grounded in peace and social justice.
