Makkah Conference Advocates for Muslim Unity and Collaboration
The “Building Bridges Between Islamic Schools of Thought” conference in Makkah, under King Salman’s patronage, gathered over 90 countries’ Muslim leaders to discuss unity. The second conference titled “Building Bridges Between Islamic Schools of Thought” convened in Makkah under the patronage of King Salman, attracting Muslim leaders from over 90 countries. The event, organized by the Muslim World League (MWL), emphasizes the theme “Towards an effective Islamic alliance.’ ‘Opening sessions discussed pressing issues affecting regions such as Palestine, Sudan, and Syria, alongside the plight of Muslim minorities globally.
Attending participants comprised senior muftis, scholars, and representatives from various Islamic councils. The Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Asheikh, in his address, underscored the pivotal role of Islamic scholars in fostering Muslim unity. He advocated for wisdom to prevail over discord, highlighting the need for compassionate relationships and mutual trust among Muslims.
The Grand Mufti urged attendees to reject extremism and partisanship, advocating for evidence-based understanding within Islam. He stated that current challenges should promote unity rather than division, reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s commitment to Muslim solidarity as a leading nation within this sphere.
Mohammad bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, the MWL chief, remarked on the continuation of efforts stemming from a previous meeting’s outcomes. He acknowledged the importance of managing diversity and fostering unity through mutual respect and understanding.
Al-Issa expressed concern over historical doctrinal conflicts harming the Muslim community but affirmed that genuine unity need not require uniformity. He stated that dialogue must evolve into actionable strategies, especially now that the groundwork for Islamic commonality has been established.
The conference is set to launch practical initiatives based on a foundational document approved by Organization of Islamic Cooperation member states, advancing from theoretical discussions to execution.
