Ethiopia Observes International Women’s Day Emphasizing Women’s Empowerment

Ethiopia celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8, 2025, focusing on women’s participation and empowerment. Major events were held in Koye Feche, Sheger City, and Gambella, featuring speeches from notable leaders. This year’s observations included discussions on progress in women’s rights and participation, situating IWD firmly in the national agenda for the 49th time.
Ethiopia commemorated International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8, 2025, under the theme “Rapid and Sustainable Comprehensive Change through Women’s Participation.” The principal celebration occurred in Koye Feche Sub-city, Sheger City, where Ergoge Tesfaye, the Minister of Women and Social Affairs, joined government officials and key stakeholders.
In Gambella city, the celebration featured regional government officials and Meskerem Abebe, Vice President of the Prosperity Party’s Women’s Wing. During her address, Meskerem highlighted the vital contributions of women in leadership, diplomacy, conflict resolution, and peacebuilding processes.
Meskerem recognized the progress made in advancing women’s rights, combating sexual violence, and enhancing women’s roles in the economy and leadership. Ariat Ujulu, head of the Gambella Regional State Women and Social Affairs Bureau, emphasized the region’s advancement in empowering women, stating that recent initiatives have increasingly included women in development and decision-making.
Additionally, International Women’s Day was celebrated in Mekelle city, Tigray region, featuring participation from federal, regional, and local leaders. This year marks the 114th global celebration and the 49th national observance of International Women’s Day, encompassing various events throughout the country.
