Germany Urges Syria to Avoid Escalation of Violence Amid Ongoing Conflict
Germany’s Foreign Ministry has urged all sides in the Syrian conflict to avoid further violence, after over 200 deaths were reported from recent clashes. The violence involves pro-Assad fighters and government forces, with calls for peaceful solutions and political dialogue underscoring the appeal from Germany. On March 8, 2025, Germany’s Foreign Ministry urged all parties involved in the Syrian conflict to prevent a “spiral of violence” following two days of fighting that resulted in over 200 fatalities. The clashes were mainly between government forces and supporters of ousted President Bashar al-Assad, particularly in the coastal areas historically loyal to Assad. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported the retaliatory attacks by fighters allied with the current authorities, targeting pro-Assad individuals and security forces.
The German statement expressed shock at the substantial loss of life and called for efforts towards peaceful resolutions, encompassing national unity, inclusive political dialogue, and transitional justice. During a visit to Damascus earlier in January, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock extended conditional support to Syria, contingent upon the protection of minorities.
As violence surged, at least 200 deaths were recorded due to ambushes and assaults blamed on Assad’s supporters. The casualties included around 140 victims from revenge attacks, as well as 50 government personnel and 45 pro-Assad fighters. While Syrian authorities have not released an official death count, state media cited an unnamed security official discussing revenge-seeking actions by citizens in response to government security forces’ recent assault.
The Syrian Defense Ministry confirmed that government forces had regained control of several areas previously affected by conflict. Anas Khattab, head of the General Intelligence Service, also indicated that former military personnel played a role in orchestrating ongoing violence against the transitional government. Meanwhile, interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa called upon pro-Assad fighters to surrender and committed to consolidating weapon control under the state’s authority.
The recent clashes in western Syria represent the most severe violence since the ousting of Assad’s government in December, as the newly formed administration aspires to unify a nation ravaged by fourteen years of civil war, resulting in over half a million deaths and mass displacements.
