Morocco’s purchase of AH-64E Apache helicopters marks a pivotal enhancement for its Royal Air Force, aligning with U.S. security interests. On March 5, 2025, Morocco officially acquired AH-64E Apache helicopters during a ceremony at Sale Air Base, marking a pivotal enhancement in the capabilities of the Royal Moroccan Air Force (RMAF). This purchase not only bolsters Morocco’s defense capabilities but also reinforces United States foreign policy and national security.

U.S. Africa Command Commander, General Michael Langley, emphasized, “By purchasing these Apache helicopters, Morocco has made a significant step in investing in their security and in regional security. This investment now puts them in a new level of warfighting capability.” The helicopters arrived in Morocco as part of a Defense Security Cooperation Agency initiative from 2020.

U.S. Charge d’Affaires Aimee Cutrona noted the deep-rooted history of U.S.-Morocco relations, stating, “The United States and Morocco have a long history of partnership reaching back nearly 250 years when Morocco was the first to recognize U.S. independence.” The acquisition symbolizes the continuous growth of the bilateral security cooperation that benefits both nations.

The AH-64E Apache, developed in 2012, boasts enhanced features, including improved digital connectivity, upgraded engines, UAV control capabilities, full IFR functionality, and advanced landing gear. It can achieve speeds of 150 knots (278 km/hr) with a range exceeding 450 km.

According to U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel James Anderson, this model of the Apache is crucial for reconnaissance and attack missions, further enabling the RMAF to secure its borders and combat terrorism effectively. The Utah Army National Guard maintains a significant partnership with Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces through the State Partnership Program, fostering training and cooperation.

Maj. Jared Sorensen of the Utah National Guard expressed anticipation for joint training, stating, “The UTNG flies Apache helicopters, and we’re looking forward to taking advantage of more training opportunities together.” So far, 24 RMAF pilots have been trained in the U.S., with five instructor pilots prepared, and training will ensure the squadron is fully operational in six months.

General Langley remarked, “These aircraft give the Royal Moroccan Air Force a lethal tool that will enable them to further our mutual security goals in the region.” He emphasized Morocco’s importance as a key ally and the value of this partnership for both nations. U.S. Africa Command oversees military operations in Africa, contributing to peace and stability on the continent.
