OIC Endorses Egypt’s Gaza Reconstruction Plan, Opposes Trump Initiative

The OIC endorsed Egypt’s plan for revitalizing Gaza, opposing Trump’s proposal. This plan emphasizes Palestinian Authority governance and calls for international support. The initiative reflects unity among Arab states against displacement, while rejecting both U.S. and Israeli responses.
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) officially endorsed Egypt’s Gaza reconstruction plan on Saturday, which serves as a counter-proposal to U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial initiative. This formal decision was made during an emergency meeting held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, shortly after the Arab League ratified the proposal at a summit in Cairo.
The Egyptian plan seeks to rebuild the Gaza Strip under the potential governance of the Palestinian Authority and encourages the international community to support this initiative. A communique stated, “The OIC adopts the plan… on the early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza.”
Following the endorsement, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty expressed optimism for garnering broader international support, including from the United States. He indicated that the plan would aim to gain adoption from entities such as the European Union and other global partners.
Despite the OIC’s approval, the plan has faced rejection from both the U.S. and Israel, indicating a lack of recognition for Hamas’s role in Gaza. U.S. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce remarked that the proposal “does not meet the expectations” of Washington; however, Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, referred to it positively as a step toward cooperation.
The reaction to Trump’s initial proposal has united Arab nations in opposition. Political analyst Rabha Seif Allam from the Al-Ahram Center noted that Egypt is actively working to build a coalition that combats plans for the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, illustrating their commitment to the residents of the region.
The OIC’s endorsement of Egypt’s Gaza recovery plan signifies a collective effort among Muslim nations to oppose U.S. initiatives that threaten Palestinian residency. While Egypt seeks international backing, the rejection from the U.S. and Israel underscored the complexities surrounding the shift in governance in Gaza. Nevertheless, the proposal aims at ensuring the reconstruction of Gaza aligns with Palestinian governance, demonstrating a commitment to the region’s stability.
