Resilience of Ghana’s Youth Farmers Amid Climate Change Challenges

Despite a youth unemployment rate of 13.9% and over 50% classified as underemployed, agriculture presents significant opportunities, particularly as the average age of a farmer reaches 55 years.

Research involving 511 young Ghanaians reveals that inclement weather, including floods, droughts, and extreme heat, does not substantially diminish their interest in agricultural participation. A notable 76.7% of respondents expressed a preference for pursuing farming careers, influenced by positive emotions regarding climate and access to innovative technologies.

Furthermore, engagement from urban youth and ease of land access are key factors promoting interest in agriculture. The study advocates for the rebranding of farming as a technologically advanced career choice and encourages the establishment of training centers aimed at attracting further participation from young farmers.

In summary, the study illustrates that Ghana’s youth exhibit remarkable resilience towards farming, undeterred by climate change’s challenges. The positive attitudes towards agriculture, facilitated by technological advancements and urban engagement, present a pathway for future growth.
