In his statements, Trump announced the suspension of all federal funding to South Africa and reiterated his proposal to offer sanctuary to farmers he claims are fleeing the country due to safety concerns. On February 7, he signed an executive order ceasing all assistance to South Africa while promoting the resettlement of “Afrikaner refugees escaping government-sponsored, race-based discrimination.”
Referring to the ongoing situation, Vincent Magwenya, spokesperson for the South African presidency, emphasized the country’s avoidance of “megaphone diplomacy.” South Africa remains focused on fostering a mutually beneficial trade, political, and diplomatic relationship with the United States.
Trump’s recent remarks followed a statement from Elon Musk, who noted that his Starlink satellite business is hindered by the race-based policies in South Africa. These policies, established to address the historical impacts of apartheid, require significant Black ownership for businesses.
Furthermore, South Africa reported that the United States had informed them of withdrawing from a coal-transition agreement worth $1 billion, alongside Trump’s termination of numerous healthcare initiatives across the continent, including those in South Africa.
In a speech on February 6, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa asserted, “We are not daunted to navigate our path through this world.” He highlighted the resilience and determination of South Africans while avoiding any direct reference to Trump. The specific areas of US federal funding intended for cessation by Trump remain undetermined.
