UN Launches Emergency Appeal in Response to Ebola Outbreak in Uganda

The United Nations in Uganda has launched an emergency appeal for USD 11.2 million to support national efforts against the Ebola virus outbreak detected in January 2025. The initiative involves collaboration between UN agencies and humanitarian organizations focusing on high-risk districts. As of March 3, 2025, Uganda has ten confirmed cases of Ebola, including two deaths.
The United Nations in Uganda has launched a joint emergency appeal to raise USD 11.2 million over three months (from March to May 2025) to combat the Ebola outbreak first identified in January 2025. This appeal targets comprehensive support for national response efforts against the Ebola virus disease.
Mr. Leonard Zulu, the UN Resident Coordinator in Uganda, remarked, “This emergency appeal in support of Uganda’s response to the Ebola presents joint actions planned by the UN Country Team and eight humanitarian international non-governmental organizations.” The campaign has already mobilized USD 4.6 million through repurposing existing resources and encourages partner support to meet the funding goal.
The planned response will center on seven high-risk districts while being adaptable to additional areas based on evolving needs. WHO Representative Dr. Kasonde Mwinga stated, “The goal is to rapidly contain the outbreak and address its impact on public health as well as associated socio-economic life of affected people.”
As of March 3, 2025, Uganda has reported ten confirmed Ebola cases, including two fatalities. Notably, five cases involve health workers, and four are family members of the initial case. Currently, a total of 299 contacts have been tracked, with investigations ongoing regarding the last reported case.
In summary, the UN’s emergency appeal aims to raise significant funds for Uganda’s ongoing battle against the Ebola outbreak. With proactive measures and collaboration among various organizations, the objective is to manage the outbreak effectively and mitigate its socio-economic impacts. Continuous communication and resource mobilization will be essential in achieving these goals.
