Casualties Rise in El-Obeid Due to RSF Shelling in Ongoing Sudan Conflict

On Sunday, shelling by the RSF in El-Obeid, Sudan, resulted in nine civilian fatalities and over 21 injuries. The RSF has been in conflict with the army since April 2023 and recently conducted an intense bombardment, targeting civilians and public transport. The conflict has already caused extensive loss of life and significant displacement across the region.
On Sunday, a paramilitary assault in Sudan’s El-Obeid resulted in the tragic deaths of nine civilians and injuries to 21 others, according to a medical source. The attack was conducted by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have been in conflict with the army since April 2023. The hospital source, who chose to remain anonymous for safety reasons, reported that 23 individuals suffered injuries, with two ultimately succumbing to their wounds, raising the death toll to nine.
Witnesses described the bombardment as intense, noting that one of the shells struck a public transport bus filled with passengers. This assault marked the third consecutive day of RSF attacks from the northern and eastern directions. Last month, the Sudanese army successfully lifted a nearly two-year-long RSF siege on El-Obeid, a city strategically positioned at the intersection of routes connecting Khartoum to the western region of Darfur.
The RSF has gained control over nearly all of Darfur, while the army maintains its hold over the northern and eastern parts of the country. Recently, the army has also regained significant territory within Khartoum and central Sudan. The ongoing conflict between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy, RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, has led to catastrophic consequences, including tens of thousands of fatalities and the displacement of over 12 million people, resulting in one of the largest hunger crises in the world.
The recent shelling by the RSF in El-Obeid underscores the ongoing violence in Sudan and its devastating impact on civilians. With the RSF and Sudanese army engaged in a prolonged conflict, the humanitarian crisis continues to escalate, leading to widespread instability and suffering among the population. Immediate attention towards resolving this conflict is imperative to avert further loss of life and alleviate the humanitarian situation.
