India confirmed its support for Mauritius’ sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago ahead of PM Modi’s visit. On March 8, India reiterated its support for Mauritius regarding the restoration of its sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized India’s longstanding relationship with Mauritius, stating, “We have supported Mauritius in its stance on its sovereignty over Chagos.”
Last October, India welcomed the agreement between Mauritius and the United Kingdom concerning the return of the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius, emphasizing that this treaty completed Mauritius’s decolonization process. As per the agreement, Mauritius will reclaim sovereignty over the British Indian Ocean Territory, while the UK retains rights over Diego Garcia. Misri noted the necessity for ongoing discussions between Mauritius and the UK, especially following the establishment of a new government in Mauritius.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Mauritius on March 11, at the invitation of Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, and will attend the National Day celebrations as Chief Guest. India’s Defence Forces will participate in the celebrations, including the Akash Ganga skydiving team. The Prime Minister’s last visit to Mauritius occurred in 2015.
The Foreign Secretary highlighted the deep-rooted ties between India and Mauritius, characterized by a shared history and robust people-to-people relationships. During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will engage with the President and Prime Minister of Mauritius, meet senior dignitaries, and connect with the Indian-origin community.
