Marco Rubio Engages in U.S.-Ukraine Peace Talks in Saudi Arabia, Prepares for G7

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to Saudi Arabia for discussions regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Following Saudi Arabia, he will attend the G7 foreign ministers meeting in Canada. The essence of these discussions revolves around establishing a framework for peace and securing commitments from all parties involved.
United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to arrive in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Monday to engage in U.S.-Ukraine discussions as President Donald Trump aims to expedite the resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. During his visit, Rubio will also meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud to advance mutual interests and strengthen ties between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, as stated by State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce.
In a recent conversation with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, the State Department highlighted Rubio’s emphasis on President Trump’s commitment to swiftly conclude the war, urging all parties to take constructive measures for lasting peace. Concurrently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during his visit to Saudi Arabia on the same day.
Following their meeting, a Ukrainian delegation led by Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, will remain in Saudi Arabia to hold discussions with U.S. officials. This delegation will also include Sybiha, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, and military commander Pavlo Palisa. Rubio will participate in these talks alongside U.S. National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff. According to Witkoff, the objective is to lay the groundwork for a peace agreement and an initial cease-fire.
These U.S.-Ukraine talks have occurred three weeks after U.S. officials conversed with Russian representatives in Riyadh. Ukraine reaffirmed its commitment to constructive dialogue with the U.S., expressing hopes for meaningful discussions on necessary decisions. Zelenskyy conveyed in a recent post on X that Ukraine has pursued peace from the onset of the war, stating, “Realistic proposals are on the table. The key is to move quickly and effectively.”
Post his diplomatic engagements in Saudi Arabia, Rubio will head to Charlevoix, Canada, for the Group of Seven (G7) foreign ministers’ meeting, scheduled from March 12 to 14. Following discussions at the Munich Security Conference in February, G7 foreign ministers reiterated their dedication to achieving a sustainable peace and the development of robust security guarantees for Ukraine, emphasizing that any future sanctions would depend on Russia’s genuine efforts to end hostilities against Ukraine.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s diplomatic mission includes significant discussions on the Russia-Ukraine war in Saudi Arabia, emphasizing the U.S.’s commitment to fostering peace while strengthening ties with Saudi Arabia. Following these discussions, Rubio’s attendance at the G7 meeting in Canada underscores the continued international emphasis on achieving a durable peace for Ukraine, along with reinforcing security assurances necessary to stabilize the region.
