National Security Intervenes to Halt Ghana Weightlifting Federation Election

National Security halted the Ghana Weightlifting Federation’s elections due to defiance of a court injunction by the Federation. An injunction was filed by Michael Nii Annan Yarboi over alleged malpractices. Despite this, the Federation planned elections for March 8, 2025, which led to immediate intervention by National Security amid tensions among supporters.
The Ghana Weightlifting Federation’s elective congress was halted by National Security officials following the Federation’s disregard for a court injunction. This injunction was filed by Michael Nii Annan Yarboi, a former NDC parliamentary candidate, who sought to prevent the election due to alleged malpractices within the Federation.
Marie Korkor Agbah-Hughes, a female weightlifter, reported to JoySports that an injunction notice from the Accra High Court was served to the Federation; nevertheless, they proceeded with plans to hold elections on March 8, 2025, which ultimately resulted in the election’s immediate cessation.
Agbah-Hughes stated, “We were supposed to have the Weightlifting [Federation] elections, but there was an injunction sent because the elections committee was running an illegal election. The board for the Weightlifting Federation had their term run out on February 18, but they were still going to go ahead with the elections.”
The electoral contest was primarily between Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the New Patriotic Party’s Second Deputy Minority Whip, and Yarboi, both vying for the Presidency of the Federation. National Security intervened amid escalating tensions between supporters of the candidates, leading to the decision to abort the election process.
In conclusion, the Ghana Weightlifting Federation’s election was abruptly stopped by National Security after it was revealed that the Federation defied a court injunction. This incident highlights significant issues regarding governance and transparency within the Federation, as noted by Agbah-Hughes. The electoral rivalry between Shaib and Yarboi underscores the competitive nature of the leadership landscape in Ghanaian sports governance.
