Qatar Calls for IAEA Oversight of Israeli Nuclear Facilities

Qatar has urged the IAEA to oversee Israeli nuclear facilities and called for Israel to sign the NPT. Ambassador Jassim Yacoub al-Hammadi emphasized the need for the international community to enforce compliance with international resolutions. He also criticized Israel’s aggressive policies towards Palestinians and submitted a memorandum to the ICJ concerning Israel’s obligations to UN operations in occupied territories.
Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally requested that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conduct inspections of all Israeli nuclear facilities. During a UN atomic agency session, Jassim Yacoub al-Hammadi, Qatar’s Ambassador to the United Nations, emphasized the necessity for Israel to sign the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
Ambassador Hammadi stated that the international community must uphold commitments made under UN Security Council resolutions, the UN General Assembly, the IAEA, and the 1995 NPT Review Conference. These commitments specifically call for Israel to subject its nuclear facilities to IAEA safeguards. Furthermore, he urged for intensified global efforts to incorporate Israel into the NPT as a non-nuclear state.
All countries in the Middle East, excluding Israel, are signatories of the NPT and maintain effective safeguard agreements with the IAEA. Israel is estimated to possess between 200 to 400 nuclear warheads and has consistently refused inspections of its nuclear sites as well as signing the NPT.
Hammadi also condemned Israel’s ongoing aggressive policies, which include extremist calls for the displacement of Palestinians, military offensives in the West Bank, and blockades of humanitarian aid in Gaza. He highlighted a recent memorandum submitted by Qatar to the International Court of Justice concerning Israel’s obligations to allow operations of the United Nations in occupied territories.
The memorandum emphasizes that Israel must protect the property of UN organizations, including schools and medical facilities. Hammadi called for decisive international action to enforce compliance with international resolutions, recognize Palestinians’ rights, and foster security and stability in the West Asia region.
In summary, Qatar has launched a significant call for international oversight of Israeli nuclear facilities and emphasized the need for Israel to join the NPT. The Qatari government views these actions as crucial for promoting regional security and adhering to international obligations. Moreover, Qatar’s stance on Israel’s treatment of Palestinians and the demand for humanitarian access highlight a broader concern for peace and stability in the region.
