Dr. Rachel Chimboea Huey, Principal Secretary of the Ministry, confirmed the school closure, which follows a weather advisory from the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services. She stated, “We are responding to the forecast of Tropical Storm Jude, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall and significant winds to various parts of the country.” Additionally, the Ministry of Water and Sanitation has warned of potential flash flooding, particularly in southern districts where major rivers, including the Shire River, are at risk of overflowing.
The storm has already made landfall in Mozambique, raising concerns that it will impact Malawi significantly with heavy rainfall. Correspondent George Mhango noted, “At present, the storm’s impact is not as severe as predicted. Blantyre has experienced scattered showers, and the surrounding hills are obscured by clouds.” However, he cautioned that the Department of Climate Change has forecast further intensification of the storm throughout the day.
Experts project that some areas may receive over 100mm of rainfall within 24 hours, raising fears of widespread flooding. Mhango emphasized the threat in southern districts, stating, “The situation is particularly concerning in the southern districts of Chikwawa and Nsanje.” These regions are noted for being flood-prone, and the Shire River’s swelling poses a significant threat to local communities.
The Department of Disaster Management (DODMA) is collaborating with the Red Cross to prepare for the storm. Authorities are ensuring availability of food, water, and shelter for those likely to be affected. DODMA has also been disseminating safety alerts and urging citizens to take necessary precautions.
