Rahul Gandhi Calls for Parliamentary Discussion on Voter List Concerns

On Monday in New Delhi, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, called for a critical discussion in the Lok Sabha regarding allegations surrounding voter lists, which have recently drawn scrutiny from various political factions. During the session’s Zero Hour, Mr. Gandhi emphasized that the entire opposition is unified in requesting a discourse on this matter.
Mr. Gandhi acknowledged governmental remarks on the non-involvement in compiling voter lists, yet stressed the necessity for dialogue on the increasing concerns. He stated, “The voter lists are being questioned across the country. Questions have been raised by the opposition in one voice in every state, including Maharashtra.”
Additionally, Trinamool Congress member Saugata Roy reported flaws in the voter lists, citing that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee highlighted issues, such as voters with the same Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers appearing in both Murshidabad and Burdwan, as well as in Haryana. Mr. Roy confirmed that a Trinamool delegation is scheduled to meet the newly-appointed chief election commissioner to discuss these voter list concerns further.
Moreover, Mr. Roy called for an extensive revision of the voter lists in preparation for next year’s assembly elections in West Bengal and Assam. He raised alarms over potential discrepancies, suggesting that inflated voter lists have been reported in states like Maharashtra and Haryana, and warned against similar issues emerging in West Bengal and Assam as elections approach. He concluded by urging, “Let the total voter lists be thoroughly revised. The Election Commission should answer to the country why some mistakes occurred in the lists.”
