Tensions Rise During Community Meeting in Lima Sands as PPP/C Supporters Protest

Tensions erupted during Azruddin Mohamed’s community meeting in Lima Sands, as PPP/C supporters protested his visit. The confrontation involved verbal clashes and interruptions, delaying the meeting. Residents voiced grievances regarding infrastructure and government neglect. A video captured the event, illustrating the community’s call for change and support for Mohamed’s potential candidacy.
Rising tensions between supporters of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) and businessman Azruddin Mohamed surfaced during a meeting in Lima Sands, Region Two, where nearly 100 residents gathered for an outreach event ahead of an anticipated election campaign. Mohamed, engaged in connecting with communities and addressing their concerns, met mixed reactions from the community.
The situation escalated when approximately 15 PPP/C supporters protested at the entrance, wielding placards and using loudspeakers to oppose Mohamed’s visit. One male protester stated, “Just to remind you, all of you people that Mr. Mohamed has been sanctioned by the US…thankful to the President and the Vice President of this country for the tremendous support you have been given…”. Another protester encouraged residents to reject Mohamed, exclaiming, “Pay your tax! Everybody get Mohamed out of Lima Sands…”
In a heated exchange, current PPP/C MP Nandranie Coonjah confronted residents, recording their reactions on camera while verbally clashing with them. The altercation culminated in residents responding defiantly, ultimately expelling Coonjah from the meeting area. Although the assembly was slated to commence at 2 PM, it was delayed until 5 PM as protests hindered Mohamed’s entrance into the community, where eager citizens had been waiting since 1 PM.
A video shared on Team Mohamed’s Facebook page documented the event, showing a resident expressing support for Mohamed while highlighting local grievances. “Mr. Mohamed, if you are running, every one of us here will support you because… we can’t become like Dubai with this water here,” remarked the resident, referencing unmet community needs and poor infrastructure. Residents articulated their frustrations, citing government neglect and the need for improved resources and services in Lima Sands, notably surrounding infrastructure and water supply issues.
The gathering in Lima Sands highlighted the growing tensions between political supporters and the community’s urgent need for attention from governmental representatives. While Azruddin Mohamed aimed to connect with residents, the opposition from PPP/C supporters, led by MP Nandranie Coonjah, underscored the division present in the region. Residents expressed their dissatisfaction with ongoing challenges and lack of infrastructure, calling for a reassessment of government accountability to ensure community needs are addressed effectively.
