On International Women’s Day, Fatih Ak, the Turkish ambassador to Uganda, emphasized the importance of women and girls’ access to essential hygiene products. During an event where Türkiye’s state aid agency, TIKA, donated equipment for making reusable sanitary pads, Ak highlighted efforts to empower young women in Uganda and support their economic independence.
The donation included sewing and overlock machines to aid Msichana Uganda, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering girls and women. Ambassador Ak stated, “As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we are delighted to mark another successful project under TIKA here in Uganda,” emphasizing the strong partnership between Türkiye and Uganda.
TIKA has successfully completed 94 projects in Uganda since the early 2000s, positively impacting various communities across the country. Ak remarked on TIKA’s commitment, noting, “We sincerely hope that the machinery and equipment provided today will enable the organization to support even more Ugandan women.”
Türkiye has a historical commitment to women’s rights, having granted women the right to vote in 1934, prior to several European nations. Murat Cetin, the TIKA country coordinator, explained that the provided equipment would create job opportunities and raise hygiene awareness among young women.
Cetin shared that TIKA has contributed five sewing machines, two overlock machines, and specialized nanotechnology fabrics to ensure quality hygiene standards for the production of reusable sanitary products. Winnie Nakandi, director of Msichana Uganda, expressed gratitude for Turkish support, stating, “We remain steadfast in our struggle to support underprivileged girls and women.”
The initiative aims to provide affordable hygiene solutions, offering reusable pads as cost-effective alternatives to disposable products, which are often unaffordable for low-income individuals.
In summary, the Turkish ambassador’s recognition of International Women’s Day highlights the essential need for women’s access to hygiene products in Uganda. Through TIKA’s provision of equipment for reusable sanitary pad production, the initiative aims to empower women, promote hygiene awareness, and create employment opportunities. This collaboration underscores Turkey’s commitment to fostering women’s rights and development in the region.
