Venâncio Mondlane to Appear at Attorney General’s Office Amid Legal Challenges

Venâncio Mondlane will testify at the PGR in Maputo on March 11 regarding criminal charges. His hearing was rescheduled after a request from his representatives. The cases against Mondlane stem from protests against election results, with reports of significant casualties during the unrest. His self-proclaimed decree is also under scrutiny for possible constitutional violations.
Venâncio Mondlane, a prominent Mozambican politician and former presidential candidate, has announced his intention to appear at the Attorney General’s Office in Maputo tomorrow, March 11, at 9:00 AM. Mondlane confirmed this engagement via his official Facebook account, stating, “See you tomorrow, at 9:00 am, at the PGR.” His advisor, Dinis Tivane, corroborated this information on social media, noting Mondlane had completed his obligations abroad prior to the hearing.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office (PGR) has postponed Mondlane’s scheduled hearing from this morning until tomorrow at the same hour. This rescheduling followed a request from Mondlane’s representative, who approached the PGR earlier today. The hearing is part of a criminal case filed against Mondlane last year as reported by the Attorney General’s Office.
A spokesperson from the PGR indicated that Mondlane will be questioned as part of ongoing investigations concerning at least two high-profile cases against him, which have arisen amid protests he has led against Mozambique’s election outcomes since October. Mondlane’s public silence was noted following unrest on Wednesday, where police engaged in crowd control during one of his demonstrations.
In another legal issue, on November 22, Mondlane was held liable for damages related to protests in Maputo province, with compensation demanded at 1.5 million euros. This legal action follows a previous case that claimed over 32 million meticais (approximately 486 thousand euros) in damages specifically concerning the capital, Maputo. Further investigations into charges against Mondlane were initiated concerning his self-declared “presidential decree,” which the PGR has deemed to undermine democratic principles.
This decree, issued in the “Jornal do Povo” newspaper and calling for citizen-led judicial action against police actions, has been characterized by the PGR as a violation of Mozambique’s constitutional provisions. Mondlane received recognition from the Constitutional Council as the second place candidate in the recent elections, which resulted in Daniel Chapo taking office as the fifth President of Mozambique. Notably, since the commencement of the protests in October, violent clashes have reportedly resulted in at least 353 deaths, with governmental confirmation of 80 casualties.
Venâncio Mondlane is set to appear at the PGR in Maputo following a postponement of his hearing related to serious criminal allegations. His engagement underscores his ongoing legal challenges in the wake of contested election results and widespread protests in Mozambique. The implications of his actions and the surrounding legal circumstances highlight significant tensions within the country’s political landscape post-election.
