Al Shabaab Gunmen Launch Assault on Hotel in Central Somalia

Al Shabaab gunmen attacked a hotel in Beledweyne, Somalia, where officials were meeting, leading to an ongoing siege. At least four fatalities have been reported, and Al Shabaab claimed responsibility, citing higher casualties. Witnesses describe intense gunfire and blasts, with the hotel sustaining severe damage amid the exchange.
On Tuesday, Al Shabaab gunmen attacked a hotel in Beledweyne, central Somalia, where local elders and government officials were convening. Eyewitnesses and relatives informed Reuters about the ongoing siege. Federal lawmaker Dahir Amin Jesow reported that at least four individuals have died, while government forces are actively attempting to dislodge the attackers, with some militants neutralized in the surrounding areas.
The militant group Al Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the assault, asserting that over ten people were killed. Abdullahi Fidow, a clan elder, mentioned that the meeting aimed to strategize on countering Al Shabaab’s influence in the region. “I was supposed to attend the meeting but got delayed because I was busy with a family issue. The blasts occurred before I reached the hotel,” he stated.
Al Shabaab, linked to Al Qaeda, regularly conducts bombings and armed assaults in Somalia, aiming to destabilize the government and implement strict Sharia law. Witness Ali Suleiman recounted, “We first heard a huge blast followed by gunfire, then another blast was heard,” emphasizing the chaos of the situation. Significant damage occurred at the Qahira Hotel as firefights ensued between government troops and the gunmen.
Halima Nur, a nearby resident, confirmed that intermittent gunfire continued as the siege persisted, highlighting the perilous environment amid the ongoing violence.
The armed assault by Al Shabaab signifies the persistent threat posed by this militant group in Somalia, illustrating the fragility of the region’s security. Despite attempts by government forces to respond effectively, the attack has resulted in casualties and chaos. The ongoing conflict underscores the need for strategic efforts to counter such extremist activities.
