Mauritian PM Urges Indian Investment: A Call for Economic Growth
Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam urged Indian investors to engage in Mauritius’ economy, emphasizing their crucial role in development. On March 11, 2025, Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam called for increased Indian investment, emphasizing its critical importance for the economic growth of Mauritius. During a community event attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he acknowledged the contribution of the Indian diaspora across various sectors such as construction, tourism, and healthcare.
Ramgoolam pointed out that India, with its extensive global diaspora of approximately 35 million individuals excelling in diverse fields, remains a key partner for Mauritius. He stated, “Your participation is vital for the economic growth of Mauritius. When you come here, you enrich our country.” The Prime Minister encouraged more individuals from India to invest in Mauritius.
To facilitate this investment, Ramgoolam proposed a series of economic reforms aimed at enhancing Mauritius’ business environment. He pledged to reduce bureaucracy and eliminate red tape, stating, “We are looking forward to making businesses easier to do, less bureaucracy, less red tape.” A notable reform includes the establishment of an arbitration center to expedite commercial dispute resolution.
He underlined the necessity of a transparent business framework, emphasizing that investors seek “clarity, predictability, and… the rule of law.” Additionally, Mauritius aims to procure international expertise, including judicial support from India, to improve its legal and business systems.
The appeal for investment coincided with a significant event wherein Ramgoolam awarded Prime Minister Modi the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Modi became the first Indian recipient of this distinguished award, highlighting his role in strengthening India-Mauritius relations.
In response, Modi expressed gratitude for the honor and reaffirmed India’s commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation. He noted the strategic partnership between the two nations within the Indian Ocean region and recognized their past collaborations in areas such as infrastructure and education. “This is not just an honor for me, it is an honor for the historic bond between India and Mauritius,” he remarked at the event attended by over 3,500 individuals.
