On March 11, 2025, Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam of Mauritius announced the bestowal of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a historic occasion as PM Modi becomes the first Indian recipient of this prestigious award. This accolade represents the 21st international honor awarded to PM Modi by a foreign nation, symbolizing growing recognition of his contributions on the global stage.

During the announcement, Prime Minister Ramgoolam emphasized the significance of the honor, stating, “The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean is very fitting for you, Prime Minister.” He further highlighted the exclusivity of the title, noting that since Mauritius became a Republic, only five foreign dignitaries, including Nelson Mandela, have received this esteemed award.

The announcement took place at an Indian community event where the national anthems of both countries were played, attended by PM Modi and PM Ramgoolam. Furthermore, PM Modi visited the Ayurveda garden at the State House in Mauritius, developed in association with the Government of India, accompanied by President Dharambeer Gokhool. During a special luncheon hosted by President Gokhool, PM Modi expressed his appreciation for their gracious hospitality and reaffirmed India’s commitment to fostering their enduring relationship.
