On March 11, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Navinchandra Ramgoolam, and his wife, Veena. Modi announced that the OCI card will now be extended to the seventh generation of the Indian diaspora in Mauritius. This significant gesture reaffirms the strong ties between India and Mauritius.
Modi, honored with Mauritius’ highest civilian distinction, The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean, expressed gratitude towards the Mauritian people and government for this recognition. He stated, “I humbly accept this decision with great respect. This is not just an honour for me, it is an honour for the historic bond between India and Mauritius.”
During a community event in Port Louis, Modi emphasized the enduring relationship between India and Mauritius, referring to the latter as a bridge to the Global South. He articulated, “For us, Mauritius is family! This bond is deep and strongly rooted in history, heritage and the human spirit.” Modi also remarked that Mauritius acts as a critical link that supports India’s SAGAR vision, which stands for Security and Growth for All in the Region.
Furthermore, Modi affirmed that Mauritius is not merely a partner country, describing it as a “Mini India” and highlighting its vital role in connecting India with broader global initiatives. He noted that Mauritius continues to remain central to India’s strategic objectives in the region. The following day, Modi is scheduled to serve as the chief guest at Mauritius’ national day celebrations.
