Nigerian House of Representatives Directs NCC to Block Pornographic Sites
The Nigerian House of Representatives has ordered the NCC to block all pornographic websites in the country. Sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, the motion was supported on the grounds of Nigeria’s religious values and global concerns regarding the effects of pornography. The Nigerian House of Representatives has mandated the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to block access to all pornographic websites within the country. The motion was introduced by Dalhatu Tafoki, a member of the All Progressives Congress from Katsina State. He asserted that cyber pornography poses a significant challenge globally and underscored that Nigeria has not taken sufficient measures to combat this issue.
Highlighting Nigeria’s religious background, Tafoki noted that major religions in the country condemn nudity and obscenity. He pointed to-laws enacted by various nations in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East that prohibit pornography as examples for Nigeria’s consideration.
To emphasize the negative ramifications of pornography, he referred to warnings from experts, stating that it can contribute to issues such as adultery, prostitution, and addiction. “Renowned psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued stern warnings on the psychological, sociological and mental consequences of viewing pornographic content,” he stated.
The motion received support during a voice vote led by Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives. In addition to the blocking of sites, the House has directed the NCC to enforce penalties on any service providers that do not comply with this order.
