Petrobras Discovers Significant Gas Reserves at Sirius-2 Well in Colombia

Petrobras announced the completion of a DST at Sirius-2 well off Colombia’s coast, confirming significant gas productivity. The find could increase Colombia’s reserves by 200%. Petrobras holds a 44.44% stake in the consortium with Ecopetrol, which owns 55.56%. The well is the largest gas discovery in Colombia’s history, with volumes exceeding six trillion cubic feet.
Petrobras has successfully completed a drill stem test (DST) at the Sirius-2 well, located approximately 31 kilometers off the Colombian coast at a depth of 804 meters. This evaluation focused on a 100-meter reservoir interval, confirming a high level of productivity. The well lies within the GUA-OFF-0 offshore block, which is situated 77 kilometers from Santa Marta, the capital of Magdalena department.
During the DST, samples were gathered for laboratory analysis. Initial findings suggest a significant presence of gas in the region. Petrobras operates through its subsidiary, Petrobras International Braspetro – Sucursal Colombia, holding a 44.44% stake in the consortium, with Ecopetrol possessing the remaining 55.56%.
In December 2024, Petrobras and Ecopetrol jointly announced this pivotal gas discovery from the Sirius-2 well. The confirmed gas volumes exceed six trillion cubic feet, marking it as the largest gas discovery in Colombia’s history and possibly enhancing the nation’s gas reserves by 200%.
Initially designated as Uchuva-2, the Sirius-2 well is the second drilled site in the region, following Sirius-1 (previously known as Uchuva-1). The consortium will continue to evaluate the drilling results from both Sirius-1 and Sirius-2, adhering to its obligations with Colombia’s Agencia Nacional de Hidrocarburos.
Furthermore, in February 2025, Petrobras entered a strategic term contract with Bharat Petroleum Corporation for the supply of Brazilian crude oil grades. The organization also forged cooperation agreements with ONGC Videsh and Oil India to explore additional oil and gas prospects.
This recent gas discovery by Petrobras, confirmed through the DST at the Sirius-2 well, represents a significant advancement in Colombia’s energy sector. The potential increase in gas reserves by 200% and the largest discovery in the country’s history underscore the importance of ongoing exploration efforts. Petrobras’ collaborations with other corporations illustrate its commitment to expanding oil and gas opportunities.
