On March 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India visited Mauritius to pay tribute to the nation’s significant historical figures, Former Prime Minister Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and Former President Anerood Jugnauth. This homage took place at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, where he was joined by the current Prime Minister of Mauritius, Navin Ramgoolam.

During the visit, both Prime Ministers planted a Bael sapling, symbolizing their commitment to the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative which emphasizes environmental sustainability. Official Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the importance of this moment in remembering two foundational leaders of Mauritian history.

PM Modi expressed his sentiments on social media, stating, “Paid homage to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and Sir Anerood Jugnauth, two great leaders who have made indelible contributions to Mauritius’ progress,” underscoring the significance of their legacies.

He noted his appreciation for the participation of Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam in the planting initiative, describing it as a heartfelt gesture towards nature and sustainability. Modi asserted that this effort reflects their shared dedication to a more sustainable future.

Following the homage, PM Modi is set to meet with Mauritian President Dharam Gokhool, who has arranged a state lunch in his honor. In the evening, he will address the Indian community in Mauritius alongside Prime Minister Ramgoolam. Furthermore, he is expected to play a significant role in the National Day celebrations, as he will be the chief guest for Mauritius’ Independence Day on the following day.
