Tragic Landslide in Colombia Leaves Four Dead and Hundreds Homeless
A landslide in southern Colombia’s Narino department has resulted in four fatalities and left around 100 families homeless. The community of El Encano in Pasto was the worst affected, and local authorities are responding to the aftermath by clearing debris and providing drinking water. Furthermore, flooding in La Cruz has compounded the crisis with additional families affected.
On March 11, 2025, authorities in Colombia reported that a landslide in the Narino department resulted in the tragic deaths of four individuals and rendered approximately 100 families homeless. The incident primarily affected the community of El Encano in Pasto, with local officials confirming significant damage caused by recent rains, which have led to emergencies across various cities.
Governor Luis Alfonso Escobar stated, “The rains have left emergencies in several cities, but the most devastating occurred in (the community of) El Encano, where a landslide claimed the lives of four people and left serious damage,” highlighting the severity of the situation.
The landslide has affected over 400 families, obstructed several roads, and caused the collapse of three aqueducts in the area. In response, authorities are actively clearing debris and deploying tanker trucks to supply drinking water to affected residents.
In addition, the neighboring city of La Cruz saw flooding that impacted around 100 families and resulted in the loss of three pedestrian bridges. Escobar noted that, “24 cities have requested machinery to clear roads and deal with landslides,” indicating a broader need for urgent assistance.
