A Ugandan supporter of Arsenal was shot dead by a security guard while celebrating the team’s victory over Manchester United. Another fan was injured in the incident, which occurred at a restaurant. Local police are currently investigating and seeking the guard and restaurant manager involved.

A supporter of the English football club Arsenal, while celebrating their victory over Manchester United, was reportedly shot dead by a security guard in Uganda. Another fan sustained injuries during this incident, which took place at a restaurant in Lukaya, approximately 100 kilometers from the capital, Kampala, right after Arsenal’s 2-0 win on Wednesday night.

The incident unfolded when the manager of the establishment became irritated by the excessive noise from the celebrating fans and instructed the guard to intervene. Despite warnings to quiet down, the fans continued their revelry, leading to the guard allegedly firing multiple shots into the crowd. John Ssenyonga, a 30-year-old fan, was confirmed deceased at the scene while another long-time Arsenal fan, Lawrence Mugejera, was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Following the incident, both the guard and the manager of the restaurant are currently in hiding, with police actively searching for them. According to Twaha Kasirye, the local police chief, a firearm was recovered from the scene. He stated, “We condemn the events that occurred and urge anyone with information that may assist in the apprehension of the suspect to come forward.” The police chief also encouraged fans to manage their exuberance appropriately.

Violence related to football matches has been a recurring issue in Uganda, particularly concerning English clubs. In October, a fan of Arsenal assaulted a Manchester United supporter after a match. Additionally, in January of the previous year, a youth counselor was fatally wounded during a confrontation following Arsenal’s defeat to Manchester City. Just a week prior to that, another Arsenal fan was killed in Adjumani amid similar unrest.

This tragic incident underscores the ongoing issue of violence related to football fandom in Uganda, particularly surrounding matches involving English clubs. As authorities investigate the circumstances leading to the shooting, there is a critical need for promoting peace and responsible behavior among supporters during celebrations and disputes. The incident prompts a significant call to action for fans and authorities alike to foster a safer environment at sporting events.
