Minister Robeson Benn warns that individuals appointed by Venezuela to govern the Essequibo region will face treason charges. He noted the presence of Venezuelan operatives in Guyana and stated that anyone accepting such appointments will be prosecuted. Additionally, Guyana has requested provisional measures from the ICJ following Venezuela’s decision to hold elections on May 25.

Robeson Benn, the Minister of Home Affairs, has issued a stern warning concerning the ramifications for individuals appointed by Venezuela to govern the Essequibo region. He emphasized that the authorities are monitoring Venezuelan operatives, known as ‘sleepers’, who might be active within Guyana. Benn asserted that anyone supporting or appointed by Venezuela in these elections would face treason charges.

While addressing a police conference, Benn made it unequivocally clear that any Guyanese who accepts an appointment as Governor of Essequibo or any official capacity post-election will be charged with treason. He stated, “We will charge that person for treason and lock them up; each and everyone of them.”

Furthermore, he reiterated that not only the appointees would face charges, but anyone providing support to them would also be implicated. This escalates the situation as Guyana has recently filed a request for provisional measures with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) after Venezuela’s decision to hold elections on May 25, which coincides with Guyana’s 59th independence celebrations.

In conclusion, Minister Robeson Benn has clearly communicated that anyone appointed by Venezuela to govern Essequibo will face severe legal consequences, including treason charges. The situation is further complicated by Venezuela’s plans for elections that coincide with a significant national celebration for Guyana. The government is vigilant in identifying any foreign operatives within its borders and firmly pledges to uphold national sovereignty.
