Ghana Allocates GH¢492.5 Million for Disaster Relief Efforts

The Ghanaian government has allocated GH¢492.5 million to assist victims of tidal waves in Ketu South and spillage from Akosombo Dam. The budget includes GH¢200 million for tidal wave victims and GH¢292.5 million for those affected by dam spillage. Over 300 individuals from Agavedzi were displaced, while an estimated 35,857 people faced displacement due to the dam spillage.

The Ghanaian government has allocated a total of GH¢492.5 million to aid victims of two major disasters affecting the nation. A significant sum of GH¢200 million is designated for those impacted by the tidal wave disaster in Agavedzi and nearby areas in the Ketu South Constituency. This funding was announced by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minister of Finance, during his presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement in Parliament.

In addition to the tidal wave relief, the government has committed GH¢292.5 million to assist individuals affected by the spillage from the Akosombo Dam. Recent media reports indicate that over 300 individuals have been affected by the tidal waves, resulting in the destruction of approximately 50 homes and causing severe damage to about 80 kilometers of coastline.

In response to these calamities, President John Mahama visited the affected areas in Ketu South and promised enhancement of the sea defense project to safeguard vulnerable coastlines. Furthermore, the Akosombo Dam spillage is reported to have displaced around 35,857 people, including many children, as per a report from UNICEF. This situation arose when the Volta River Authority released water from the dam to avert overflow, leading to flooding in low-lying communities, particularly in the North and Central Tongu districts.
