GJA Collaborates with GNA to Strengthen Media Operations in Ghana

The GJA met with the GNA to discuss strengthening operations and addressing challenges, emphasizing the need for a well-resourced media agency to enhance journalism in Ghana. GJA President Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour and GNA General Manager Mr. Albert Kofi Owusu highlighted the role of government support and the importance of maintaining professionalism in the face of operational constraints.

On March 12, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) leadership engaged with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at its headquarters in Accra. The meeting focused on enhancing the operations of the GNA and tackling challenges it faces, emphasizing the importance of a well-resourced national news agency for credible journalism in Ghana.

Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, the GJA President, expressed the Association’s commitment to supporting media institutions, highlighting that their success greatly affects the welfare of journalists and the quality of public information. He commended the GNA for its contributions to journalism and reiterated the GJA’s advocacy for media freedom and the independence of journalistic institutions.

Mr. Albert Kofi Owusu, General Manager of GNA, called for government support to recapitalize the Agency for improved efficiency and sustainability. He pointed out that years of inadequate funding had hampered operations and led to high attrition rates among staff due to poor remuneration. Despite these obstacles, he affirmed GNA’s dedication to professionalism and the credibility of its reporting.

Founded in March 1957, the Ghana News Agency is the first state-owned wire service in the nation, playing a crucial role in gathering and disseminating news to local and international audiences. The Agency maintains correspondents in all regions, ensuring comprehensive coverage of national events.

The GJA delegation featured key members, including Mr. Kofi Yeboah, General Secretary and Mrs. Audrey Dekalu, National Treasurer, among others. The GNA team included various department heads, showcasing collaboration between the two organizations.
